It seems that while the former is much more commonly used, the latter is actually correct:
But these discussions are 4 and 10 years old respectively.
I was introduced to nootropics about 2 years ago and have heard a lot of people say the word nootropic, but before I searched online I had not once seen or heard it pronounced “no-oh-tropic”.
Personally I think to pronounce nootropic as “new-tropic” is more intuitive and rolls off the tongue easier.
Is this a situation where the more intuitive pronunciation has taken over as the term has gained popularity among the masses, and the original pronunciation has been lost in… well… pronunciation?
How do you pronounce it?
When I first got involved in nootropics I wondered the same thing. But finally settled on…
I pronounce it “new-tropic” where the tropic sounds like your living in the tropics. Which I did for a long time 🙂
This is one of those instances in the English language where the popular pronunciation of a word has taken over.
Love to hear other feedback on this.
