Phenibut (β-Phenyl-GABA, β-phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid, Noofen, Citrocard) is an analogue of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The addition of a phenyl ring allows Phenibut to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). They exposed the rabbits to emotional stimuli causing anxiety in the animals. Anxiety caused the rabbits to ‘freeze’ and exhibit defensive reactions. Behaviors very similar to what happens in humans when they’re under stress.
When the rabbits were administered Phenibut, the anxiety-caused reactions of defensiveness and passive reactions (freezing) decreased to normal behavior.[x]

An electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to measure brain waves after subjects took water only, GABA or L-Theanine. 60 minutes after administration, the study showed that GABA significantly increased Alpha waves and decreased Beta waves compared to water or L-Theanine.

GABA Increases Human Growth Hormone
Bodybuilders and athletes use Phenibut or even GABA to help repair and build muscle. And there are several studies supporting the notion that GABA increases Human Growth Hormone.
In one study, researchers worked with 19 subjects who were given a single oral dose of 5 grams of GABA. 18 subjects were given a placebo during this trial. 3 hours after the administration of GABA, blood samples were taken. The team reported that “GABA caused a significant elevation of plasma growth hormone levels”.[xvii]
GABA helps Reduce Insomnia
A Los Angeles study conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial with 18 patients with sleep disorders. The patients received either a placebo, or Gabadone (a combination of GABA and 5-hydroxytryptophan).
The difference between the two groups of sleep-deprived patients was significant. The Gabadone group fell asleep faster, stayed asleep longer, and had a better quality of sleep than the placebo group.[xviii]

Recommended Phenibut Dosage

In prior videos you mentioned that using Methylene Blue with Phenibut could cause Serotonin Syndrome or a Hypertensive Crisis. Can you explain in detail how that occurs?

Bill, I have never mentioned Methylene Blue and Phenibut is the same sentence so you may be thinking of someone else’s videos. But Phenibut stimulates dopamine receptors, and antagonizes beta-phenethylamine (PEA). PEA increases the action of dopamine, norepinephrine, acetylcholine and serotonin. So, that is likely why someone said it is contraindicated with Methylene Blue.

I feel like garbage all the time. Phenibut seems to be pretty much the only thing that pulls me up to what I would describe as “functional” – i.e. able to tackle tasks beyond basic living. I wouldn’t describe it as superior or enhanced, but merely “normal”. It feels familiar, like back when I was a little kid and my body and brain just worked.

My two questions, which might not be answerable – First: because I clearly have a GABA deficiency, is there as much risk of tolerance? (since I’m not boosting it to super-physiological levels, but merely something closer to normal human baseline) (So I guess the real question is, do you get tolerance from Phenibut itself, or super-normal levels of GABA?)
Second: is there anything else that is more reliable to boost GABA levels more naturally and sustained?

Dave, many have said they quickly grow tolerant to Phenibut. So, it is best to cycle it but that cycling schedule needs to be worked out by you for your unique system.
The best long term solution for increasing GABA levels is by using PharmaGABA daily. That is GABA in its natural form and you cannot grow tolerant to it as long as you follow dosage recommendations. I know because I took the Braverman test as well which showed I was deficient in GABA. I keep my GABA levels up by using 300 mg PharmaGABA every night before bed.

I travel and do a great deal of pubic speaking. I do hit energy dips (jet lag and plain old fatigue) and every couple of weeks I started using 1 g Phenibut 7 or 8 hours before a talk, 200 mg caffeine 30 minutes before. I loved the effect. Spoke well, energized, alert, and . . . slept well that night. I bought the product from Nootropic Depot. They don’t sell it any more so I bought from LiftMode. I don’t know if it’s fake, or weaker, or what, but I don’t seem to get anywhere near the same benefit. Is there a reliable brand or resource I can buy Phenibut from?

Toby, Eria Jarensis Extract increases norepinephrine and Phenibut raises GABA. I have not seen anything showing they are contraindicated but on the other hand I haven’t seen anything positively showing they are safe to use together either.

Hi David, phenibut is literally the only thing that actually works for my insomnia of three years. I take 1000 mg at bedtime once or twice a week, when I either really need around 7 hours of sleep or have something important to do.
Is there anything that mimics what phenibut does without the addiction issues? I have taken up to 1500 mg of GABA, up to 500 mg of pharmagaba, but they don’t do the same thing. Please help! 🙂

Gary, most find somewhere between 50 – 100 mg 2 or 3 times per day is optimal for Picamilon. Save your last dose of 50 or 100 mg for before bed.

I wouldn’t call Phenibut a safer alternative than benzodiasepines and i wouldn’t call it a nootropic. People have gotten addicted after using it only a few days in a row, and worse withdrawal than quitting benzodiasepine. I wonder if it also cause cognitive impairment over time like benzo often cause.

Hi David!
My wife has genetic mutation (Her mom, sister and grandma also suffer from this) which make glutamate decarboxylase somewhat less effective. She reacted very bad to 5g L-Glutamine. Now she had stroke like symptoms (double vision, headache and loss of balance, a little slurred speech)
We found out that 150mg of Pregabalin twice daily nearly removed all of her symptoms after just 1-2 days. When she forgot to take it, symptoms started to return.
It looks like her Glutamate/gln/GABA cycle is out of whack. I thought about using:
1. Nootropics that prevent glutamate toxicity
2. Nootropics for glutamate decarboxylase enzyme efficiency
3. And direct suplements with GABA agonism like Phenibut, Picamilon (although pregabalin mechanism is much different I dont know if its safe to combine them)

Aleksander, I would definitely avoid Phenibut when using Pregabalin. Too much of a chance of putting her in a coma. Picamilon on the other had may be OK. But not entirely sure. I would definitely check this with a pharmacist (not a doctor) and see what she says knowing the mechanism of action of both.
