Imagine waking up every day feeling genuinely energized, focused, and ready to conquer anything.
No more snooze button battles. No more afternoon crashes.
Sounds like a dream, right?
But what if I told you the missing piece to that sustained energy puzzle is a tiny, often overlooked molecule called NADH?
In this article, we’ll uncover exactly what NADH does and how optimizing it could be the game-changer for your energy levels.
You don’t need a science degree to understand this, just a desire for more energy
But first, it helps to understand how your body makes energy. In really simple terms. You don’t need a degree in neuroscience to understand this.
How NADH Energizes Your Body and Brain
Your body uses NADH, which is the primary carrier of electrons from glucose and lactate that you get from the food you eat.
And those electrons are used in the electron transport train needed to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in your mitochondria.
ATP is the main energy source that gets you through your day. So, in other words, you need NADH to transfer the energy from the food you eat into a type of energy your body can use.
The thing is for ATP energy to be produced a lot of things need to be lined up for this process to work.
If your energy has tanked, it could be because:
- You’re low in B-Vitamins
- Problems with enzyme function used convert food to energy
- genetic issues
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Getting older, and your body as difficulty converting food to energy
When this happens, your energy levels tank. And now you do whatever you can to boost those energy levels. Like grabbing a coffee. Which is not the greatest idea. Because you’re jittery if you drink too much. Or maybe even causing problems with sleep.
Or if you’re an athlete, you rely on sugary energy drinks spiked with loads of caffeine. To get the energy you need.
Now, I’d like you to consider a healthy alternative. So you can go to work without experiencing a caffeine crash at the end of your day. And feel good that you’re not consuming all those toxic ingredients.
This is where a good NADH supplement comes into play. Because it can help you get back the energy you’re so desperately searching for. Naturally.
Why NADH Is Gaining Popularity as a Nootropic Supplement
With the increased interest in natural nootropics that support brain health and energy without the jittery effects of stimulants, NADH stands out.
Because NADH not only increases ATP energy production but also boosts the production of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine which are key neurotransmitters for motivation, focus, and mood.
Now, you know how I like to talk about clinical studies and dig into the neuroscience behind every supplement I review.
Don’t worry because this is easy to understand. These are just a few samples of clinical trials using NADH for:
- chronic fatigue
- physical stamina and energy in athletes
- as a nootropic for brain support
- for lowering blood pressure and a healthier heart
- and for jet lag and shift work during the night.
NADH for Fatigue & Energy
Chronic fatigue syndrome feels like debilitating long-term fatigue. But it also manifests as a host of other issues including problems with sleep, low-grade fever, sore throat and headaches.
A study conducted at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. had 26 chronic fatigue patients who were given 10 mg NADH or a placebo for 4 weeks.
The researchers concluded that NADH proved to be a valuable therapy in the management of chronic fatigue syndrome.[i]
NADH for Athletes: Physical Stamina and Recovery
Athletes and anyone who enjoys any form of an active lifestyle could benefit by supplementing NADH as a natural performance enhancer.
NADH works because physical exertion rapidly depletes ATP energy production. Using a NADH supplement can help replenish your energy stores and help you recover faster.
The evidence that proves this works is a study published in Nutritional Neuroscience which showed that NADH improved endurance performance and improved reaction time in cyclists compared to placebo.
The study authors noted the cyclists experienced:
- Reduced perceived exertion
- Quicker recovery
- Better mental clarity during intense exercise
The researchers noted that NADH may also reduce oxidative stress and support antioxidant systems after exercise, making it ideal for helping you recover quickly after a workout.[ii]
NADH for Brain Support and Dopamine
NADH is directly involved in the production of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.
Dopamine is usually made in your brain inside the neurons that use it. Tyrosine is first converted to L-DOPA through the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase. L-DOPA is then converted to dopamine.
We know that the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase is the rate-limiting controller of dopamine synthesis. And this has been demonstrated in studies with Parkinson’s patients where tyrosine hydroxylase is much lower than in healthy people.
Researchers in Austria worked with 885 Parkinson’s patients in an open-label clinical trial. The intention of the trial was to try a therapy that might increase the brain’s own dopamine production instead of giving the patients L-DOPA which is the standard Parkinson’s treatment.
In this study, 415 Parkinson’s patients received intravenous (IV) NADH, and 470 patients got an oral dose of NADH.
Both groups reacted well to NADH including improvements in motor function, walking, pushing, posture and speech. They also showed improvements in cognition and mood.
The researchers found increased dopamine metabolites in the urine of the patients. Indicating that NADH induced an increase in dopamine production.
I think this part is amazing. Most of the Parkinson’s patients were able to reduce and even eliminate their other Parkinson medications by supplementing with NADH instead.[iii]
NADH and Heart Health
Blood pressure increases as you get older. So, scientists wondered if NADH would have a similar effect on heart health as CoQ10. Because they are both electron donors in the electron transport chain for ATP energy production.
In this animal study, rats were given NADH for 10 weeks. By the end of the study period the researchers found that NADH had lowered bad LDL cholesterol levels.
The researchers concluded that NADH supplementation could be useful in preventing age-related increases in blood pressure.[iv]
And here’s one more study. So pay attention if you travel a lot or work the night shift.
NADH for Jet Lag and Sleep Cycle Regulation
NADH has also been studied as a potential remedy for jet lag, thanks to its ability to regulate circadian rhythm and restore daytime alertness after rapid time zone shifts.
Dr. Georg Birkmayer did a clinical trial and discovered that airline pilots who supplemented NADH experienced significantly improved alertness, reaction time, and cognitive function compared to those given a placebo.
NADH seems to work by:
- Stabilizing neurotransmitter production
- Enhancing daytime energy
- Countering the brain fog associated with disrupted sleep cycles
This makes NADH an excellent choice for frequent travelers or shift workers who deal with disrupted sleep patterns.[v]
Now, based on what we’ve talked about so far, who do you think gets the most benefit when using NADH?
Let’s summarize that in a list.
Who Benefits Most from NADH Supplementation?
NADH as a supplement has the potential to work for most who try it. But the most benefit will be felt by you if you are dealing with:
- Mental fatigue or physical fatigue
- Low motivation or depression
- Brain fog or slow thinking speed
- Frequent travel or working the night shift
- Early signs of age-related cognitive decline or memory lapses
- Professionals or students who need sustained mental focus
- Athletes who need more energy, stamina, and faster recovery
- Biohackers who stack NADH with other mitochondrial energy boosters
So, which NADH supplement works best for more energy and faster thinking?

Now, listen up because you don’t want to miss this next point.
How and when to take NADH
NADH needs to be taken on an empty stomach. It’s a good idea to take it first thing in the morning before you do or eat anything.
You take it early because once you eat your first meal, your body starts producing NADH on its own. From glucose in your meal.
Because if you take NADH too close to a meal you could end up with too much NADH in your system. And the result could be the opposite of what you’re looking for. And that’s feeling fatigued.
