I regularly get asked what multivitamin I personally use and which one I’d recommend.

This post is a detailed response to very best multivitamin for men question for the year 2024. And it’s important because you will not find a Top 5 or Top 10 best multivitamins for men on my site.

I simply cannot in good conscience recommend any other of the hundreds of multis that are on the market. Only the one I currently use.

And I have tried many of the top brands of men’s multivitamins over the last 16 years. Including the well-known raw- and whole-food multivitamins available at your local vitamin shop, Whole Foods and online.

Here you’ll find out why I have problems with most multivitamins on the market.

I reveal some of the deceptive marketing used by these supplement manufacturers. And how many of the poor-quality vitamins and minerals used in some of these multis are cheap substitutes your body cannot use.

Then you’ll learn more about the best multivitamin I’ve ever used. And continue to use in 2024.

The first time I took this multivitamin I actually felt the difference.  That had never happened before when using any other multi.

I’ll tell you how each of the vitamins and minerals in this multi work in your body and brain. Along with links to the science to back it all up.

So stay tuned, and find out why the Performance Lab® NutriGenesis Multi is the best multivitamin for men in 2024.

And if you’re looking for the best Multi for women, you’ll find that here > Multi for women

Why Should Men Use a Multivitamin Supplement?

Men who use a multivitamin often say they take one daily because it’s good health insurance. They “hope” their multi is making up for the essential nutrients missing in their diet.

Turns out they’re onto something. A survey conducted a few years ago with 4,673 teens aged 12 – 19 years found that <1% ate a healthy diet.[i]

best multivitamin for menAnother study published by the Mayo Clinic found that only 2.7% of the adults surveyed followed a healthy lifestyle. The survey included not eating a healthy diet.[ii]

But the thing is, even if you ate your vegetables, didn’t smoke, drank little alcohol, avoided junk food and exercised regularly, you’d still have a problem trying to maintain optimal health.

Because our fruit, vegetable, and meat products simply do not provide enough of the vitamins and minerals you need to support a healthy body and brain.

I’ve written extensively on this subject over the last few years. Here’s an example …

The US Department of Agriculture has recorded the nutrient density of various fruit and vegetable crops since the early 1900’s. And the statistics are downright scary.

A medium-size apple grown today has literally a fraction of the vitamins and minerals compared to an apple grown in 1914. And this drop in nutrient content has been a problem with most fruits and vegetables over the last few decades.[iii]

It’s even more critical to get optimal amounts of the vitamins and minerals daily if you are dealing with chronic health problems.

And if you’re committed to improving your health, in competitive sports, dieting, or simply interested in biohacking your system for better performance – your body and brain require the help of a high-quality multivitamin.

best organic multivitamin for menDo Men Really Need a Multivitamin in 2024?

It’s true that supplements will not make up for poor eating habits and an unhealthy lifestyle. But using a multivitamin can make a healthy diet even better.[iv]

In the previous section you saw that even the healthiest diets are challenged getting all the vitamins and minerals you need.

But let’s take a minute, and look at how optimal levels of these nutrients affect your day-to-day health.

Testosterone – Healthy levels of free and total testosterone help you feel like a man and keep your prostate health in check. Particularly when in balance with the other sex hormones like DHT and estrogen.

You need optimal amounts of Vitamin D, Vitamin B5, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and boron to make the testosterone you need.

Antioxidants – A well-functioning immune system is required to keep inflammation, oxidative stress and free radicals in check. Shielding you from whatever bug or virus that is going around. And keeping age-related neurodegenerative disease at bay.

For a healthy immune system, you need optimal daily doses of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin B2, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, and Manganese.

Energy – Nothing puts a damper on your day like fatigue. Running out of energy at any time of the day should be unacceptable. Family, friends and co-workers depend on you. And you depend on you.

For energy metabolism you must get your daily dose of each of the B-Vitamins, iron, iodine, magnesium, copper, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum.

Cognition and mood – As a man, you recognize how important it is to be able to think on your feet. Quick learning and memory make life easier. Less anxiety and a good mood make for a better day.

And to support cognition and mood you need optimal amounts of each of the B-Vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, calcium, iron, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, inositol, and vanadium.

Heart – you know the feeling when your heart is beating normally, you feel full of energy and healthy, and your blood pressure is down. And if you’ve never thought of this before, count yourself lucky.

Because as you get older, things become more of a challenge. Keeping blood pressure under control or warding off a family history of heart disease and/or failure becomes paramount.

For optimal cardiovascular health you need the right daily dose of Vitamin, C, Vitamin E, the B-Vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, chromium, and vanadium.

Looking great Sporting healthy looking hair, skin and nails tells the world how you feel inside. Call it a barometer of good health.

the best multivitamin for menBut spending your hard-earned cash on cosmetics will only help make you look good. The nutrients required for a healthy complexion, great hair and healthy-looking nails and eyes will help you look AND feel good.

For healthy hair, skin and nails you require optimal daily doses of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B7, Vitamin B9, Inositol, Vanadium, and Boron.

I could go on, but I think by now you’re getting the picture.

Are you absolutely sure you ate enough seafood this week to get your optimal dose of iodine?

Was your plate loaded twice every day with green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains to get optimal doses of magnesium, all the B-Vitamins, boron, chromium, copper, potassium and Vitamin K?

I know mine isn’t. And it’s likely why I felt so damn good the first day I tried this new multivitamin/mineral supplement by Performance Lab®.

Best Multivitamin for Men in 2024

Now that we’ve established that men should use a daily multivitamin – which one do you get?

It turns out there are very few raw- and whole-food supplement makers who produce a decent high-quality multivitamin.

I’ve tried many of them, and some are good. These whole-food multivitamins contain the right form and often the right dose of each vitamin and mineral.

multivitamin-raw-fruit-vegetable-powders
“Fairy Dusting” of fruit & veggie powders – wasted capsule space

But all of them add unnecessary ingredients.

Like a ‘fairy dusting’ of organic fruit and vegetable powders to make it look more like a “whole-food” multi. This adds zero benefit other than fill up the capsule. But it looks good in advertising.

Or you come across a few mgs of CoQ10 in a form your body cannot use. But the manufacturer will market and sell it as a “heart healthy” multi.

Or a few mgs of choline bitartrate and sell it as optimized for cognition. Any experienced neurohacker knows a few milligrams of this form of choline is useless. But it looks good on the label.

Here’s a better idea – how about a simple, pure, bioactive multivitamin that supplies optimal amounts of each of the vitamins and minerals your body and brain need to thrive every day.

The best multivitamin for men in 2024 without question is the Performance Lab® NutriGenesis Multi for men. Suitable for everyone on any diet including a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Other Ingredients

The only “other ingredients” in the Performance Lab® NutriGenesis Multi for men are NutriCaps® Pullulan capsules made from fermented tapioca and gluten free

Performance Lab NutriGenesis Multi for men - Supplement FactsThat’s it. Nothing else but NutriGenesis® lab grown vitamins and minerals that are identical to what you’d get from real, organic food.

This is a big deal.

Because as I mentioned earlier, most multivitamin supplement manufacturers like to waste capsule space with ‘fairy dust’ amounts of whole-food fruit and vegetable powders.

Or tiny amounts of single nootropics like CoQ10, choline, maca, tea leaf, Ginkgo, ginger, Zeaxanthin and others.

I suppose it looks good in their advertising. But it does nothing for you. Zero. Zip. There’s not enough of any of these nootropics to be effective.

Many of these multivitamins also include toxic ingredients like; silicon dioxide, vegetable stearate, silica, magnesium sulfate, hydrogenated palm oil, polyethylene glycol, Yellow #6 and others. Even in multis made for kids!

These ingredients are used for color, odor control, anti-clumping agents, preservatives, and flow agents so the powder doesn’t stick to encapsulation machines.

The problem is they’re toxic. And can suppress your immune system,[xxviii] cause mitochondrial dysfunction, damage brain cells, cause oxidation stress,[xxix] and who knows what else.

By comparison, the Performance Lab® NutriGenesis Multi contains no “other ingredients”. Just pure, clean nutrients your body recognizes as food and can use.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown of each ingredient & function! How would you compare this multi to a similar multi called Metabolic Maintenance The Big One with Iron

Many thanks for your sterling contribution, David! I use most of the Performance Lab range & MLP- thanks largely to you. It works for me too.

My question concerns the T-booster product. I am curious about your opinion of it??? I’ve often thought of trying it for energy/virility boosts as I’m middle-aged…

    David Tomen
    August 9, 2020

Rab: their T-Booster is a good product but don’t know how much it will raise your T-levels. They used to own another brand (which was sold once they started Performance Lab) with a similar formula that I used to use and it raised my levels by 200 – 300 points.

Hi David,
I am now using Performance Lab Multi for men. I seems good, but the company’s information on the ingredients is incomplete. For example:
~ Is the vitamin B12 as methylcobalamine or cyanocobalamin?
~ Is the vit K2 mk4 or mk7?
~ Is the vit E as D-alpha tocopheral?
~ How much of the vit A is as retinol and how much as beta carotene?

I am especially interested in the type of B12.

    David Tomen

Frederick, each of the vitamins and minerals in this Multi mimic what you would normally get from food. In the same natural form including the cofactors needed for our bodies to recognize this as food. You’ll find more of an explanation on each ingredient on this page: https://www.performancelab.com/pages/nutrigenesis

And that includes Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin. Please check that page and see if it provides enough information to satisfy you. Personally, I know it’s that best Multi I’ve ever used because I feel better when I’m using it.

Hi David,

First, I’d like to say a big THANK YOU for all your hardwork in research and sharing your knowledge by putting together this excellent resource. As a male in my early 50’s, it’s helped put me on the right track to start taking control of my health and well being by quickly weeding out all the marketing jargon and making more informative decisions when it comes to the plethora of products available today! Given your experience with MVMs, have you had a chance to compare Life Extension Mix Capsules with Performance Lab Nutrigenisis for Men? If not, would you mind looking at their ingredients and giving your thoughts? They’re sold by Quality Supplements and Vitamins, Inc. out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Website: LifeExtension.com

Thanks Again,
James

James, I’ve compared the two multivitamins and it looks like Life Extension has a quality Multi. I just don’t know how the vitamins and minerals are manufactured for their Multi. But I do know how Performance Lab makes their Multi. I’m also a little familiar with the cost of manufacturing a high quality Multi. And I don’t understand how Life Extension can sell their Multi at that price. Not unless they’re losing $20 per bottle selling it.

My experience with the Performance Lab Multi over the last 2 years shows me that it’s more effective than any other Multi I’ve ever used. So I have no reason to change nor to recommend another Multi.

      Hi David:

You got me interested 🙂 with your rather positive comment on “Life Extension Mix Capsules”

      QUESTION-1:
I also had a look at “Life Extension Mix Capsules”
They do not contain Vanadium ?!?! — is that OK ?

      QUESTION-2:
what about all the “Other Ingredients”
((( Other ingredients: gelatin (capsule), maltodextrin, vegetable stearate, silica, microcrystalline cellulose, starch. )))
      Are these OK ?

      Thanks,
      John

        David Tomen
        July 12, 2020

John, not sure what I was smoking/drinking/whatever if I made a comment like that about the Life Extension product you’re talking about. No, the “other ingredients” in that supplement have no business being in any dietary supplement. They are not necessary and do nothing for your health.

And vanadium is kinda’ critical for the human body. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24470091/. Science is still working on everything that it does. But studies are ongoing for the treatment of cardiac and neuronal disorders, malignant tumors, viral and bacterial infections (such as influenza, HIV, and tuberculosis), and tropical diseases caused by parasites, e.g., Chagas’ disease, leishmaniasis, and amoebiasis.

There’s no comparison between the Performance Lab Multi for men and the Life Extension product. And the Performance Lab Multi is $39/mth at 4 capsules per day, and Life Extension about $55/mth at 12 capsules per day. Even the math doesn’t work in my humble opinion.

David, thanks for all the information you have provided.
I am a 82-year-old retired Electrical Engineering researcher that took up biochemistry as a hobby when doctors told me there was no real cure.
I have enjoyed an unbelievable recovery from Congestive Heart failure, Diabetes, cancer and a aliment list too long to enumerate.
This progress has benefited from the information you provided.

I specialize in the use of biomarkers and testing to optimize my lifestyle for vitality.
My latest project is evaluating lifestyle changes that improve my vascular system. I was planning to test silica and went to you site for pretest information. I was surprised to see you classify silica as harmful.
        Did I read that correctly?
What is your basis for that statement?

        Thank You in advance.

Bill, Silica (Silicon Dioxide) is used in foods and dietary supplements as an anti-caking agent. It helps extract moisture from supplements for example so the powder doesn’t clump together.

While it’s on the low end of the toxicity scale it is not necessary to contaminate supplements with this compound. How I know this is because Performance Lab and Mind Lab Pro are some of the highest quality products on the market. And do NOT use Silica or Silicon Dioxide.

To improve your vascular system consider using Pine Bark Extract and/or Vinpocetine instead.

Arthur, a multivitamin will indirectly help sexual performance. Because many of these vitamins and minerals are required for the synthesis of the major neurotransmitters and creation of hormones. It’s the most fundamental thing you can do to support whatever else you need to do to boost sexual performance. Without this the other will not work well.

Hi David, what do you think about performance lab changing ratio of vitamins and minerals in PL multi? i dont know what to think about it.. because they removed strontium and put it to their fflex formula, added 2mg of iron which is supposed to beat zinc when it comes to absortion, lowered zinc by 7,5mg and lowered boron by 3mg and put it to their Testosterone formula and also changed some other ratios (but i think that boron and zinc are crucial for testosterone synthesis) so in one way it looks to me like money milking from people because they took something good from one product wich lowered value of that product and put it to other product so it pushes people to buy both products for more money by calling it SYNERGY and on the other way they made that “MLP” deal 3+1 with free shipping..so i would like to hear your opinion on this..(btw in your post are still old vitamin/mineral ratios). thank you and sorry for my english

Marek, I had a chat with the head of Performance Lab a couple of days ago about the formula changes. And the decision was made on the formulas so that if someone chose to use the Performance Lab Multi + the T-Booster they wouldn’t overdo it on the zinc dosage. Before it was creeping into the maximum dosage range for many of the age group they serve.

Iron was added because guys need it too and are not getting enough from food. Strontium on the other hand is a controversial supplement. And there are many who warn against using it because it replaces calcium not only in bones. But also the calcium required for some cell signaling functions causing mental impairment and amnesia.

This is the way I look at. You can choose the negative view of life and be suspicious about everything. Or the path I choose which is optimism and knowing most of us are doing the best we can to do the right thing.

The majority of us need a multivitamin because we’re not getting these nutrients from food. Many of us guys also need help in the hormone department. But far fewer are concerned about joints and muscles.

I appreciate the headsup that I need to update some posts. I’m getting to them as fast as I can. And if I miss anything please let me know.

Its not that i am trying to be suspicious about everything.. im just trying to think about all possible options. Anyway…thank you for your reply and your explanation of that situation

Marek, no offense meant. I think Performance Lab made a move in the right direction with these formula tweaks. And I still haven’t found a better Multi anywhere.

Hi David,

Thanks for the in depth review of performance lab Multivitamin. I actually went to their site and read about their products and am considering their Multivitamin.

I have found another product that seems equally good or slightly better. I’d like to get your opinion before I make a decision.

The other product is NATURELO Whole Food Multivitamin for Men – with Natural Vitamins, Minerals, Organic Extracts

It’s close to the same price but seems to offer a bit more in quantity and variety of ingredients.

Have you seen this brand before? The ingredients are clearly labeled with the source and total mg values. Additionally, they have over 2k reviews on Amazon with nearly 5 stars (real reviews) I’d be interested to hear your perspective.

Allen, I’m familiar with the brand and it’s likely one of the multivitamins I would have considered until Performance Lab started making a multi.

The “Organic extracts” are a waste of capsule space and are absolutely useless. But it looks great on a label. It’s why I wrote an entire post on how to select a multivitamin because of these types of dishonest marketing practices by so many companies: https://nootropicsexpert.com/how-to-select-the-best-multivitamin-for-brain-function/

      David,
I read your multivitamin article and use it as a template when evaluating products. I saw the “organic extracts” as a red flag, per your article, but was confused by the actual ingredients list. Other than the extracts being a waste of valuable space, are there any potential negative concerns about NATURELO?

      I have been taking

Garden of Life Multivitamin for Men – mykind Organic Men’s Once Daily Whole Food Vitamin

Garden of Life seems to be a decent product, I dont have overt complaints thus far. Im leaning heavily towards the Mind Lab vitamin, especially considering the price. If I buy a 3 month supply of Mind Lab, they will give me the 4th bottle free! This drops the overall price below any other Multi-Vitamin, in this quality bracket.

Allen, there’s nothing toxic about eating organic fruit powders. The question is why would you do it? There is no value in using this in a supplement other than clever marketing.

I used the Garden of Life Raw Food Multi for men for years and they’re doing something similar. It’s a good multi.

But the Performance Lab Wholefood Multi avoids putting anything in their capsule except real vitamins and minerals. And I was serious about saying when I first started using it I felt better. It was a physical feeling of wellness which is difficult to describe.

This is the Performance Lab Wholefood Multi I’m referring to and I think you’re confusing it with Mind Lab Pro. MLP does use 3 of the B-Vitamins that are also used in the PL Multi. But you are correct that it’s price competitive with Naturelo and Garden of Life.

Hey David. Do you have any recommendations for a multi mineral? I want to get the Garden of life Vitamin code multi, but its mineral profile is lacking.

Joe, sorry for repeating myself. But you’ve left the same question all over Nootropics Expert. Here it goes again, “I used the Garden of Life Multi for men for years. Until Performance Lab came along. And found that the Performance Lab NutriGenesis Multi for men was superior. So much so that I could ‘feel it’ right after the first dose.

You get a therapeutic and effective dose of each vitamin and mineral your body and brain needs everyday. With zero “other ingredients”. Why go anywhere else? https://bit.ly/347dm5M

Maureen, it should not be a problem but you may need to reduce the dose a little. I.E. instead of 4 capsules per day you could try 3 capsules.
