Phenibut (β-Phenyl-GABA, β-phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid, Noofen, Citrocard) is an analogue of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The addition of a phenyl ring allows Phenibut to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The majority of studies on Phenibut have been conducted in Russia. And most studies have been done with animals. In this study using rabbits, scientists looked at anxiety behaviors and how they were effected by Phenibut.
They exposed the rabbits to emotional stimuli causing anxiety in the animals. Anxiety caused the rabbits to ‘freeze’ and exhibit defensive reactions. Behaviors very similar to what happens in humans when they’re under stress.
When the rabbits were administered Phenibut, the anxiety-caused reactions of defensiveness and passive reactions (freezing) decreased to normal behavior.[x]

Beta brain waves are important for attention, alertness, concentration and developing memories. But excess levels of concentration, particularly during stress, can lead to anxiety, depression, insomnia and more stress.

In this study, researchers investigated using GABA on relaxation and immunity during stress in humans. They evaluated the effect on 13 subjects of GABA intake on brain waves.
An electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to measure brain waves after subjects took water only, GABA or L-Theanine. 60 minutes after administration, the study showed that GABA significantly increased Alpha waves and decreased Beta waves compared to water or L-Theanine.
The researchers concluded that raising brain levels of GABA induced relaxation and diminished anxiety.[xii] And you raise brain levels of GABA effectively when supplementing with Phenibut.

Phenibut Clinical Research
GABA was identified as a neurotransmitter several decades ago. And there had been a lot of research on GABA published since. But most of it is focused on how GABA works. And the drugs and chemicals which affect its action.
There is very little research available on using GABA as a supplement. Likely because most scientists believe that GABA taken as a supplement will not cross the blood-brain barrier.
And there is even less research available on using Phenibut. Particularly in humans. Most of the clinical trials have been done in Russia and were done with animals.

GABA Increases Human Growth Hormone
Bodybuilders and athletes use Phenibut or even GABA to help repair and build muscle. And there are several studies supporting the notion that GABA increases Human Growth Hormone.
In one study, researchers worked with 19 subjects who were given a single oral dose of 5 grams of GABA. 18 subjects were given a placebo during this trial. 3 hours after the administration of GABA, blood samples were taken. The team reported that “GABA caused a significant elevation of plasma growth hormone levels”.[xvii]
GABA helps Reduce Insomnia
A Los Angeles study conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial with 18 patients with sleep disorders. The patients received either a placebo, or Gabadone (a combination of GABA and 5-hydroxytryptophan).
The difference between the two groups of sleep-deprived patients was significant. The Gabadone group fell asleep faster, stayed asleep longer, and had a better quality of sleep than the placebo group.[xviii]
Neurohackers consistently report a similar effect on sleep quality when using Phenibut.
Recommended Phenibut Dosage

Hi David!
My wife is a vocalist who suffer from globus hystericus only when She perform at stage or in the studio. Naturall suplements like Gaba, Ashwagandha, Taurine, CBD work well for her but effect is subtle. Would your recommend Phenibut?

Adam, sounds like an anxiety disorder but I definitely do NOT recommend Phenibut as a treatment. Aniracetam with Cognizin is a great anxiolytic on its own.
One client from several months ago solved his problem of paralyzing anxiety he would get only in front of an audience by using Lemon Balm extract. It solved his problem within a day.

Let me start by saying thank you for addressing cognition-related issues & helping out here. Maybe you could add a Reward/donation/tip tab here for people to reward you for the time spent answering their questions.
I’m a daily low-medium dose phenibut user, I take it instead of nasty pharmaceuticals, along with other nootropics & it’s been great so far.
Sometimes I get a numbness/electrifying feeling in my extremities which I think is too much GABA effect from phenibut? (not sure). Even if I take lower than usual doses sometimes…
Anyhow, if that’s the case, what could be a good way to combat/reverse this uncomfortable feeling in your opinion? Could Glutamatergics like Piracetam & Sulbutiamine be a quick fix? (if not please suggest me a great one to use)

Joe, that is indeed a side effect of excess GABA and the only way to reduce it is to take a Phenibut holiday for a couple of days every week.
Piracetam is not a glutamatergic but is a cyclic derivative of GABA. It does not touch the GABA system in your brain or your gut. And Sulbutiamine is required for the enzyme α-KGDH which maintains stable levels of glutamate and GABA. You could try Sulbutiamine but I’m not sure if it will solve your problem. The only sure way is to reduce excess GABA by cutting back on Phenibut.

Hi David,
Aside from phenibut, are there any other nootropics you are aware of that you should not have in your system if consuming alcohol? Would it predominately be other GABA agonists? I’m currently taking l-theanine twice a day and plan on starting with KSM-66 twice a day also and these are the 2 compounds I was most concerned about.

Future Alchemy Repose Natural Sleep Formula
I would say that 90% of the time when I take two pills before bed, I sleep incredibly well. I have had insomnia for two years since getting off of three depression medications. I have been concerned about using it due to dependence. The rep who I bought it from suggested using it twice a week.
GABA does not thing for me (nor has anything really). Though you recommended Delta-8. I have used it three nights in a row and it appears that 6 mg is a good spot for me. I tried 12 mg and had a horrific night of sleep.
If I decide to more regularly use Phenibut, would you recommend twice a week at most? Would you recommend the 275 mg HR version from above? I don’t know how much phenibut I get from the two pills in the Repose product.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Gary, the thing I detest about supplements like this one by Future Alchemy is their “proprietary formula”. That for me is a show-stopper. And then I only recognize the first 2 ingredients. The other ingredients are not necessarily a “bad” thing but I haven’t done the research on these Ayurvedic herbs so cannot comment on them.
But this sentence from your comment says it all “I don’t know how much phenibut I get from the two pills in the Repose product.”
While I avoid Phenibut because it is so potent, when use responsibly it can be a very effective sleep aid and anxiolytic. So I would choose the HR version IF I was going to use this type of supplement because I know exactly what I’m putting into my body.
The only other downside to using Phenibut for sleep is you can only use it 2 or max. 3-times per week. Phenibut is like using a benzo for sleep. This is a classic example of “more is NEVER better”. And when you decide to stop using Phenibut be prepared for some nasty withdrawal symptoms. I should not be as bad if using it only twice per week. But don’t quote me on that.

The rep at Alchemy responded and said that the Repose has 200 mg of phenibut per capsule, meaning when I do take it, I am taking 400 mg.
I totally hear you on the dependence/withdrawal issue. This is why I have never consistently taken it twice per week. I’ve taken it off and on for 18 months or so. Far more off. I am considering it because I am so desperate as the insomnia continues to worsen.
The Delta-8 isn’t looking as promising as I had hoped. I am taking around 6 mg per night (I quarter a 25 mg gummie). The one night I upped it to 12.5 mg was a nightmare! I may try to up it to 9 mg tonight. There is one company that combines D8 with CBN. I have some expensive CBN oil that I tried a year ago to no avail. I may add that to the 9 mg of D8 and see if that helps.
I also purchased a different company’s D8 online yesterday. It seemed to have the most positive reviews from various media. It’s 20 mg per gummie and far more expensive, but had the least junk and chemicals in it.
I am four nights off of Gabapentin, as I mentioned on your Magnolia Bark review, so hoping that if the insomnia has been worsening due to the weaning and now elimination of GP, it will eventually get better again.
As to the HR phenibut, I think I may order a bottle to either test twice a week or just to have around when I need some night of sleep resembling normal. Being that I take around 400 mg in the Repose product, would you recommend I purchase the 500 mg version over the 275 mg?

Gary, I think HR Supplements only has the 275 mg version in stock right now. I trust HR Supplements but do not know the other company so will always defer to someone I know.
And be careful with Delta-8 because you can easily take too much and used in excess is not pretty. My son did it by mistake one night and his anxiety went through the roof.

How do you feel about Nootropics Depot? They also sell phenibut but in 250 mg vs 275 mg at HR. If I am presently taking 200 mg per capsule for a grand total of 400 mg, taking two of these gets me to 500 mg. HR sells a 500 mg. The Depot site has a bunch of reviews. Have you purchased anything from there?

HR Supplements on the other hand have been in business for over 25 years and their reputation is solid. I have been using some of their supplements for years and it’s quality product which is the reason I refer people to them.

Hi I appreciate all the info you have been providing here! I ve got a question I have been taking Phenibut 3 times a week at 1.25 g a dose i take 2 days off in between. Form all the info that i read looks like i should scale down my dosage. In general i have great responses from it good sleep and a great next day but looks like i should scale down my dosage and amounts that i do in a week. I mainly use it for sleep. Looks like i should start finding a better sleep stack to supplement what i have been doing. What would you suggest for reducing the Phenibut dosage and frequency and may suggestions for other sleep stacks?

Chris, I am not a fan of Phenibut because of its abuse potential. And I cannot think of a good reason to use it. But a few guys swear by it and say it is the best anti-anxiety supplement they have ever used.
Phenibut is much more potent than supplementing with GABA. And if you decide to stop using it if you have been using it for awhile you’ll go through some really nasty withdrawal. A lot like detoxing from benzos.

Wow, that’s interesting. I was hooked on ativan for 5 years back in the 80s (panic disorder) and later hooked on klonopin for 18 years up to 2016. It was a nightmare getting off them – benzo withdrawl is worse than heroin, so they say.

Hello David!
I have a few questions about phenibut. First of all iam 10 months free from drug abuse för many many years. Been using alot of different drugs. But the real struggle to givetvis upp have been xanax. Used as much as 30 mg daily just to feel “normal” And function. Iam very decided to not return to that life. But thing is iam experiencing realy bad post acute abstinence symptoms åt the the moment. IT kinda feel realy hopeless. The social anxiety is by får the worse. Used to have no social problems at all and its realy bugging me that i cant perform as i would like. I have started to a void social situations and gett alot of anxiety when i do interact socialt, especially new people. Feelings like iam acting wierd and realy feeling like a “addict” And thinking they know about my criminal and drug abusing past. Realy not used to this feeling. Loved attention för all my life and liked being in the center of everything. Just feeling week and stressed out för not performing. Realy want to start working and en something with my life. But it feels som fucking hard just because of the social anxiety. Kinda sucks just going to the store. Anslyzing everything before (what can happens) during (going inside other Peoples head and what they ser thinking) and after i anylize the crap out how it went.
