My Sleep Supplements Criteria

If you are desperate for a good night’s sleep like I was, you’ll try just about anything.

In fact, an entire industry has blossomed around sleep. McKinsey & Company reported in 2017 that the ‘sleep-health’ industry is collectively estimated to be worth up to $40 billion.[ii]

Products and services offered simply to get a good night’s sleep include everything from mattresses to sleep consultants to prescription and OTC sleep aids.

Sleeping pills like zolpidem are GABAa receptor agonists that bind to the α-1 subunit, which are believed to be responsible for the drug’s sedative properties.

The problem is this mechanism of action is likely responsible for memory prevention effects as well.[iii]

We know that sleep is essential for memory consolidation at the end of every day. Using prescription sleep meds prevent that memory formation from happening.[iv]

So if you put a priority on memory and learning, sleep meds may not be the best option.

Performance Lab Sleep - natural Ambien alternativeOne of the most important parts of quality sleep involves the hormone melatonin. It’s naturally secreted by your pineal gland. And plays a critical role in your circadian rhythm and sleep cycle.[v]

But as I touched on earlier, I’ve had problems when using melatonin as a sleep supplement. And the thing is most sleep supplement stacks on the market use synthetic melatonin.

“Natural” melatonin was first extracted from the pineal gland of cows. But has fallen out of favor since the mad cow disease scare.

Synthetic melatonin for supplements is manufactured by reducing 5-methoxyindole-3-acetonitrile with sodium and ethanol. The resulting product is then acetylated by using glacial acetic acid and acetic anhydride. It’s then mixed with an inert carrier or binder for use in supplements.

A 2017 study investigated 31 commercial melatonin supplements. And screened each supplement for the presence of melatonin and serotonin.

Published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, the researchers found melatonin content ranged from -83% to + 478% of melatonin content listed on the label.

The team also found serotonin (which is a controlled substance) in 8 of the supplements tested.[vi]

The results of this study on supplements containing melatonin are very troubling.

Because if you are sensitive to melatonin as a supplement in the first place like I am, you may be getting less, or nearly 500% more than what you thought you were getting.

And if you are using SSRI antidepressants, using a melatonin supplement with undeclared serotonin can cause Serotonin Syndrome. Which can be fatal.

Total melatonin content was significantly higher in the tart cherry group compared to no change in the placebo group.

And there were significant increases in time in bed, total sleep time and sleep efficiency in the tart cherry volunteers.

The researchers concluded that consumption of tart cherry juice concentrate provides an increase in melatonin. Which improved sleep duration and quality in healthy men and women.[vii]

The added benefit of tart cherry comes from its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Repairing your body while you sleep. Tart cherry contains anthocyanins which block COX-1 and COX-2 proinflammatory enzymes.

I recommend using 2-capsules about 90 minutes before you’re planning on going to bed. And if you have real problems with insomnia like I do, you can safely boost your dose to 4-capsules.

However, use extreme caution if you are using a prescription SSRI medication. Because Tryptophan increases serotonin. And SSRI’s increase serotonin.

Too much serotonin can produce Serotonin Syndrome which can lead to delirium, involuntary muscle contractions, high fever, and coma. Worse case and a very real scenario is death.[xiii]

First of all, thank you for the abundant, detailed, and helpful information on this your website.

QUESTION:
regarding Performance Lab Sleep product.

When I go to Performance Lab website (link below), and look at the description of “Performance Lab Sleep”, the product label shows only 3 ingredients.

That is, the label is significantly different from the label (list of ingredients) which you posted above.

Did I miss something?

Please explain the difference. I am thinking about buying this product.

Hello David,
I experience the same issue with shibz, When I take PL-Sleep I can only sleep like 3 hours-4 hours However I feel energized and continue the day with that amount of sleep but my attention diminishes significantly after 8-12 hours of work.
I think PL-Sleep is effective to make me energized when waking up but my problem is the duration is only 3 hours of sleep which is not enough and Im having a hard time getting back to sleep again.

How to extend the duration of my sleep with PL-Sleep to maximize the effectiveness?

    Robert, you can try adding separately and take it at the same time another 500 mg L-Tryptophan, about 4 oz. of tart cherry juice, and another couple hundred mg of magnesium (chelate). And try a tablespoon of raw honey before bed because it helps prevent sugar crashes in the middle of the night. Let us know if that helps.

    Robert, I suggest using turmeric and piperine before noon because it boosts dopamine and serotonin. Boosting dopamine later in the day can have a negative effect on sleep.

I actually started using this product after reading your review on their energy product. I’ve since switched out my multivitamin to theirs and have definitely felt a difference. I decided to try out their sleep formula. I am not a fan of going full in , i like trying things out at a smaller dose. The bottle says 2-4 capsules , the serving size is two capsules. i tried two capsules for about a week, it does knock me out within 90 minutes, but i get really bad dry mouth. If i drink a couple of glasses of water i find that helps but not too much for obvious reasons. But as an experiment after reading that less is more when it comes to melatonin i decided to take just 1 capsule at night. I found i actually fall asleep faster , typically within 30 minutes and i wake up probably 15-30 minutes before my alarm clock, usually around the 7 hour mark. I find that 7 hours of sleep works best for me and typically set my alarm clock for 7 hours and 30 min of sleep. Why do you think only 1 capsule worked more for me than 2, i dont think i’ll experiment with taking 4 capsules

I am having difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. I cannot turn my brain off and it’s affecting me physically. I’m nauseous during the day from not sleeping. It’s like my brain is an exposed nerve like a tooth having it’s nerve exposed. I’ve tried calcium magnesium 4 capsules daily, every day stress relief by BrainMD. Oolong tea. Please help.

    Joanne, try using magnesium 400 mg, L-Tryptophan 500 mg, and tart cherry juice 60 – 90 mins. before bed. And see how that works. This combo is designed to boost melatonin and provide the other elements needed for sleep.

    During the day sip 3 – 4 cups of organic green or Oolong tea and see if that helps quiet your brain. But not late in the day because the low amounts of caffeine could interfere with sleep.

I admire your proffessional and extenssive work and enjoys your YouTube videos.

What disturbed me in this article is that you hadn’t used any objective method to measure your sleep like the Oura ring or any other smart watch or cell app.

It would be great if you could self experiment with these kind of tools.

For my self I would try the formula 🙂

Hi,

Thanks for the review and all of the great content on your site. I’ve certainly gained a tremendous amount of knowledge.

I’ve been using the sleep formula since Sunday.

The issue I’m having with the formula is that I’m waking multiple times throughout the night. Minimum 2 times, max 4 times.

I was wondering if you know why that might be the case?

    Shibz, I was having the same problem until I hacked it with honey. Your problem may be a drop in blood glucose during the night. Using a tablespoon of “raw honey” that hasn’t been refined just before bed should prevent your body from going into sugar crisis.

      Hi,

      I don’t have any blood glucose issues, that I know of. I tend to stay within the rda for sugar.

      I’m not sure if that is relevant but I thought I’d mention it anyway.

      Do you still think Honey can help with the issue? Any alternatives to honey?

        This is not for a ‘clinical’ blood glucose health problem. It’s simply a natural thing that happens when you are fasting for hours like you do during sleep.

        My blood sugar is normal according to my last labs. And a tablespoon of raw honey before sleep solved the frequent waking issue.

        Honestly, this is not my idea. Google “sleep AND raw honey” and you’ll come across and number of natural health blogs suggesting the same thing.

        Honestly, I’m not sure about anything other than raw honey working for me and lots of other people. Let us know if you try something else and it helps.
